And it feels like I’m 17 again

Falling in love with one’s best friend could be a disaster, unless you’re lead characters in a teen flick. Then it’s full of impossibly good looking people and it always ends with a kiss. Paano na Kaya, Star Cinema’s first release for 2010, is a breath of fresh air after all that predictable festival franchise stuff. It’s sweet, airy, and not very complex. It’s like cotton candy in your mouth.

Adorable Kim Chiu plays Mae Chua, a good Filipino-Chinese girl, in love with her impossibly tisoy best friend, Gerald Anderson—equally impossibly called Bogs Marasigan. (Zsa Zsa Padilla plays his boozy socialite of a mother and she’s absolutely fabulous at it.) Mae is secretly in love with Bogs, who is naturally in love with someone else. It doesn’t take a genius (or a psychic) to predict the outcome of this love triangle: Mae becomes his girlfriend but secretly fears she’s just the rebound girl. Meanwhile, the ex girlfriend—who was so neatly disposed of in act one—comes back and so Bogs is forced to ask himself: who does he really love? The delicately lovely, funny, and adoring best friend or the ex-girlfriend and her cheating ways? I mean, honestly.

The good thing is that Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson look really good together on screen and can kiss with enough chemistry to convince us they are in love. Also, in fairness to director Ruel Bayani, the movie is well paced and the supporting cast is wonderful: opposite Zsa Zsa’s glamorous single mother, there’s Rio Locsin as Kim’s martyr of a mom, and Ricky Davao as the overbearing father. I was happy to see Cai Cortez as the sassy best friend (unfortunate about her wardrobe, though) and IC Mendoza as the witty gay sidekick.

Paano na Kaya has all the right ingredients—a strong love team dressed in a lot of cute teeny bopper outfits, a theme song, and lots of marketing from the network—and so it’s not surprising it made 10 million on its first day. And yes, it ends with a big kiss and delivers—albeit predictably—the happy ending, so why not make money off people who need to manufacture synthetic happiness in their lives?

Anyway, good for Kim and Gerald, those kids work hard.

I just wish they would stop using song titles as movie titles. Watch out—John Lloyd and Bea coming in February, yet another song title.

I am a big Kim fan, and I watched PNK because of Kim. I must say that Kim's acting was superb, and I must also thank Direk Ruel for bringing out the best in Kimmy. BUT on the whole, I do not like the movie. There are scenes which put to question the love of Bogs for Mae, that in the end, viewers like me, feel unconvinced of Bog's love. Why have those scenes na , when Anna came back, Bogs acted like he was still in love with her, when Mae said i luv u (doon sa cell), Bogs did not reply back, instead, he sid goodbye, he was thinking of calling Anna, he was toying with his cellphone, why invite Anna to dinner, why put Anna's amergency over Mae's emergency? Why have those scenes??? Those scenes totally destroyed the movie, tinanggal ang kilig, no amount of kissing, will make some of the viewers totally 100% convinced about Bog's love for Mae. Nawalan ng kilig, kahit mayroon pang torrid scene, dahil alam mo si Bogs ay talagang mas mahal niya si Anna. In fact, kung hindi pa sinabi ni Anna na sya ang humalik kay Bogs, it looked like that the kiss with Anna was initiated by BOgs. I was not happy when I went out of the cinema. Sayang, sana naman ay binigyan ng magandang story... Bakit naman ganoon,

Hey!!
I just wrote a song about love for my girlfriend and I thought I would find lyrics on your blog so that I can compare my song :P but anyhoo... you're blog is wayy nicer than mine that's for sure! If you have the extra 3 minutes to listen to the song I wrote that's on youtube, click here Girlfriend Love Songs and dont forget to rate and comment the song! :) thanx SOOOOOO much! :D

im a fan din! super love the movie & planning to see it again tom..cute ng mga lines nila! love kimerald so much!

If you are truly a fan 840am then i don't think you will see that scenario the way you have described it. I believe you are the only fan that i know who felt disappointed when the movie was finished. My boyfriend who was not a fan at all liked the movie and he believed that both Ge and Kim did well in terms of acting and that they looked good together (actually as always) but more importantly it is the story and the dialogues which really capture his/our hearts.

I Love Kimerald! Not just Kim nor just Gerald but both of THEM.

i think 8:40 was commenting on the storyline/editing and not on kg's acting perse..notice ko din, there were many scenes in the official teaser that were not on the final cut.sana maglabas sila ng dvd na directors cut, kasi nga parang bitin, o sa pagmamadali, na sacrifice ang ilang scenes to make the date..or to squeeze into a 2 hr or less film..and believe din ako sa sacrifice ni mae just to please bog's hangups..maski na she's hurting it seems that she's just a text away..
