Kim and Gerald pursue bolder roles in Maligno
ABS-CBN Interactive

After surviving their extraordinary experience on Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson have indeed come a long way as a love team with two block-buster movies, a top-rating teleserye, several TV shows and countless endorsements to boot. Rumors on a possible split-up of their tandem however are making waves as some fans clamor for Sam Milby to become Kim’s leading man on the upcoming remake of the popular Koreanovela, My Girl.

But it seems the ever-loyal Kimerald aficionados will still have their way especially now that their idols are actually busy shooting Maligno, the second sineserye from the Susan Roces Cinema Collection following the success of Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara. The two teen icons are excited as they deliver a more mature portrayal of their characters in this mini-series. "It’s quite challenging because the story is different from the light romance that Kim and I played before. It’s horror and is very dark so serious acting is really required of us," says Gerald. On the other hand, Kim is thrilled to finally work with the highly-acclaimed actress Claudine Barretto. "Idol ko po talaga si Ms. Claudine, until now I’m still starstruck in her presence. Kapag kinakausap niya ko hindi ako makasagot. But it is my dream to be in a show with her."

Catch the hottest teen love team in the country on Sineserye Presents: Maligno showing this April only on ABS-CBN.

Gerald is all grown up

Fresh from his first trip back to his hometown in Missouri, USA, since the first Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition ended, Gerald Anderson is definitely one happy camper. "Sobrang sarap. I was happy to see my relatives. I haven't seen them for years. Masaya doon. Probinsya na yun. I visited my old high school. I stayed for a week. I also did a little bit of shopping. Pero mostly sa bahay lang with my parents," he recalls.

Now that he’s back in Manila, the young actor is busy with juicy projects like the upcoming horror series "Maligno" with Claudine Barretto and Diether Ocampo. "It's a little scary doing it because it's horror. But I've become more comfortable on the set na than before when I was just starting out in showbiz," he admits.

Off-cam, Gerald busies himself with sports like basketball and wakeboarding, the latter being a new hobby he took up with his kabarkadas Joross Gamboa and Matt Evans. “I just started getting into it. Joross influenced me to do it in Lago de Oro. It was very hard. Nung first day, hindi ako makatayo. It takes time and patience. If I have time, I really wanna make time for it," he stresses.

Gerald spends the rest of his free time with rumored ladylove Kim Chiu, his constant companion on their days off. "We hang out. Nanunuod kami ng sine. We like watching Star Cinema movies. Ok naman kami. Mas close kami ngayon," he explains.

Gerald is also enjoying his independence with his parents away in the US. Gerald shares how it was living by himself for the very first time. "Okay naman pala. I order out a lot. My favorite is pizza, pasta, and burgers. I don't know how to cook," he shyly admits. The teen actor also shares his plans of going back to school this coming June. "I'm finally going back to school na. Home study kasi ako. Fourth year high school level. But I haven't got any college plans yet. I'm trying to save up for that pa," he says.

Despite being the teen idol he is today, Gerald is still the same down-to-earth guy from Gensan that he was when he first started out two years ago. In fact, he is so thankful to his fans that he makes sure to cherish every little thing he receives from them. "I keep everything, lahat-lahat. It’s all around the house. Because I know that after this is all done, it'll be nice to look back. I've gotten pictures, letters, toys, and even a flat-screen TV and a laptop," he admits. The laptop was a gift from a Sana Maulit Muli fan from Canada who flew in with her family just to catch the premiere of his movie with Kim, I’ve Fallen For You.

For the new set of teen housemates arriving this week, Gerald has some words of advice he'd like to share. "Just be yourself. Siguro kasi yun yung ginawa namin. Be nice to others. Kasi it’s not a show where you just act, you shouldn't act. Before I entered the house, I was excited pero kinakabahan din. Sobra-sobra. Mas kinakabahan kesa excited. But after the first two days, okay na. Everything was okay na. Sa tingin ko, ganun din mangyayari for them," he says.

In the meantime, this 19-year-old cutie is having the time of his life. "I'm happy. I've been happy. Ang dami kong ginawa na mga projects din so I'm content with my life right now," he sums it up for us. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Malayo na ang narating ni Kim Chiu
Boy Abunda (Pinoy Parazzi )

Nagkaroon ng agreement between ABS-CBN and SBS, the producer of “My Girl” in Korea, para sa local version ng nasabing Koreanovela. “My Girl” was a phenomenal success when it was aired in South Korea from 2005 to 2006. The series starred famous Korean celebrities Lee Dong-Wook, Lee Da-Hae, Lee Joon-Ki, and Park Shi-Yeon. In 2006, “My Girl” was dubbed in Tagalog and broadcast on ABS-CBN. The romantic comedy is about the love story of Jasmine, an impostor proficient in the English, Chinese, and Japanese languages; and Julian who is the heir of a big corporation. To fulfill his grandfather’s last wish to see his long-lost grand daughter before he dies, Julian is forced to ask Jasmine to act as his cousin. They are bound to keep a lie that no one in the family knows. However, things get complicated when they unexpectedly fall in love with each other.

Malayo na ang narating ni Kim since she emerged as the big winner of “Pinoy Big Brother 1st Teen Edition.” Aside from her two blockbuster films “First Day High” and “I’ve Fallen for You,” Kim also appeared in several ABS-CBN shows including the top-rating teleserye “Sana Maulit Muli,” opposite Gerald Anderson. Kasalukuyang ipinapalabas sa Taiwan ang “Sana Maulit Muli,” which is dubbed in Mandarin. Kim is also a product endorser and a recording artist with her first album “Gwa Ai Di” under Star Records.

18-year-old Kim Chiu has been chosen to play the female lead in the ABS-CBN Philippine adaptation of the hit Korean novela My Girl

SHE’S UNDENIABLY one of today’s most sought-out teen stars.

But with Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus-and the arrival of a new batch of would-be stars-can Kim Chiu possibly stay on top? The answer is yes as ABS-CBN announced she had been chosen to play the female lead in the network’s upcoming Philippine adaptation of the hit Korean novela My Girl.

Since she had no idea that she was among those being considered for the role, the news took her by surprise-so much so, in fact, that she burst into tears after the announcement had been made. “Are you kidding me?” she asked. The disbelief was evident in the 18-year-old’s voice, which trembled slightly as she added, “This is a joke, right?”

Singer-songwriter Yeng Constantino, who was there to promote the second season of Pinoy Dream Academy, handed Kim a tissue and patted her gently on the back. “Boy, you’re really surprised, huh?” she said, her eyes dancing with amusement. “I just can’t believe it,” Kim said after wiping her eyes and taking a deep breath.

Those words pretty much sum up her feelings towards the way her life has changed after she won Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition in 2006. Since then, she has released an album, starred in two hit movies-First Day High and I’ve Fallen For You-and a wide array of shows, all of which helped her build a strong following.

When asked to name the most memorable show she’s worked on, she said, “Definitely Sana Maulit Muli. No contest. It was my first lead role in a teleserye-and on Primetime Bida, no less!” Sana Maulit Muli, the soap opera she headlined with fellow Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition alumnus Gerald Anderson, was a ratings smash. Thanks to TFC, news of the show’s success reached other Asian countries, which prompted the big bosses of a Taiwanese network to secure the rights to air it in their country.

When told that the show was earning rave reviews from the TV-watching public in Taiwan, Kim was thrilled. “Wow, that’s awesome! I’d like to thank everyone over there for their support. I’ve never been there before, but I guess now would be a good time to visit, right?” she giggles.

It would indeed. Some people have also said that now, with the impending arrival of a new batch of teen housemates, would be a good time for Kim to improve her game- that is, develop new talents or hone the ones she already has-so she can keep her head above water. She agrees, which is why she is equal parts ecstatic and grateful that she has My Girl to look forward to. But that doesn’t mean she sees the new teen housemates as a threat.
