WHILE everyone is wondering who will be the Filipino actress to play the lead female role in the local adaptation of Betty La Fea, young actress Kim Chiu blindsided us with the announcement that she will play the lead in the Filipinization of the Korean series My Girl.
Kim is ecstatic over the opportunity. In fact, she found out that she had been chosen for the role just moments before I got to talk to her in the “Dream Big Kapamilya” presscon featuring her as the grand winner of the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition. She cried in happiness over the news and was understandably giddy as she talked to me.
Congratulations on the good news! You’re playing the lead role in My Girl....
(Giggles) It’s really welcome news. I can’t believe that they’re entrusting me with such a big role. I heard that ABS-CBN was considering other female actresses but I prayed hard that the role would be given to me. God really listens to prayers….
Were you a fan of the Koreanovela when it was first shown here?
Yes! Very much! The character is very interesting. She comes off as wacky and goofy, but with a big heart. I’m really so excited.
This project reunites you with your reel partner Gerald Anderson. Are you looking forward working with him?
I am. Gerald and I already have a good working relationship.
But if Gerald won’t be chosen, who would you want to play opposite you?
Can it be Sam (Milby)? He’s very cute! (Laughs)
Why not? You’ve already gone through a lot for such a young woman. To whom do you attribute your current success?
God and my family. God has been so very kind and my family has always supported me. Of course, there’s ABS-CBN and Star Magic and, naturally, Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition, because that’s where it all started.
Speaking of which, a new edition is coming up. What can you say about that?
It’s very exciting. I can’t wait to see the new teen housemates. I’ve always been a fan of the show, no matter what edition. And now there’s a new batch, I know I would always stay glued to the show. It’s really fascinating to watch people who don’t know each other and how they would interact and react to situations.
Any tips for them?
Just be themselves and have fun. Ultimately, it’s a game, but the experience and the lessons you learn from being a housemate are incomparable. It’s priceless and no matter what your place is, you’re a winner.
Are you still in touch with the other housemates?
Yes. We all bonded inside the house.
Of course, you’re closest to Gerald. He recently celebrated his birthday. What was your gift for him?
A wakeboard.
Did you know that that was the same gift that Angelica Panganiban gave to her boyfriend Derek Ramsey for his birthday?
Oh my! (Laughs) I don’t know! (Laughs again)
Maybe that’s a sign that you can finally be the girlfriend of Gerald and be as open as Angelica and Derek when it comes to your relationship!
I don’t know! I don’t know!

From the day that she first entered the Pinoy Big Brother house, the Chinese cutie from Cebu -- Kim Chiu proved that she is worth watching.
Chiu, who started her career when she joined PBB Teen Edition, said she’s overwhelmed by all the blessings she is getting right now. She is undeniably one of the hottest and most sought after teen stars today, with lots of projects involving television, movies, endorsements and record deals.
The young star said that she owes everything she has right now to ABS-CBN's Pinoy Big Brother.
"I'm really happy, I'm receiving so many blessings and I won't be able to have all of these if not for PBB," Kim told members of entertainment media at a press conference held at 9501 Restaurant inside ABS-CBN's compound.
Chiu joined PBB when she was only 16 years old. Before she faced challenges inside the Big Brother house, she was already battling some issues in her own home.
"My parents separated and since then I almost lost everything, the luxury of life... plus the fact that I have to deal with my stepmom that before I really don't know how to cope with it. So those times were really hard for me," she confessed.
Holding on to her dream of being an actress with the determination to prove herself, Chiu joined Pinoy Big Brother. In the end, all her efforts paid off and she was declared the big winner of PBB Teen Edition.
Her winning moment was very significant for Chiu. She said it gave her a new life and a new beginning.
"There's really a big change in my life after I joined the PBB because right after that my projects were overflowing, I have my career and I can now help my family, it's my number one goal that's why I joined the program."
Chiu also said she would not be where she is right now without her fans, and that she is immensely grateful to hem. "To my fans I owe everything to you guys, everything that is happening to me now; because without your support I won't be here," she said.
Chiu is busy promoting "PBB Teen Edition Plus". The show's primer will air on Sunday, March 16 at 9:45 in the evening, and its official kick off day will be on Sunday, March 23.
She will also be starring in the Tagalog television version of Korea's hit series "My Girl" with her onscreen partner Gerald Anderson.
