Kim, Gerald drama series a hit in Taiwan
Nestor Cuartero ( Tempo ) 04.09.08
JUST A THOUGHT: Being clever is when you believe only half of what you hear. Being brilliant is when you know which half to believe in.
A monetary lull halted the joint careers of loveteam Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu. After the former ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ sensations clinched a hit in the teleserye ‘Sana Maulit Muli,’ not much, surprisingly, was heard of the young pairing on the teleserye scene.
Little did we know that they had spread their wings on Asian shores. ‘Sana Maulit Muli’ has been sold in Taiwan, where it was reportedly a big hit. The popular series will soon also air in Cambodia, where it will be dubbed in Khmer, and also in Vietnam.
Kimerald’s Asian connection doesn’t stop there. The popular team has just been assigned to do the Filipino version of the Korean romantic mini-series, ‘My Girl.’
The series is the first of what may be a series of productions based on Koreanovelas following a deal sealed between ABS-CBN and SBS Korea. The Filipino ‘My Girl’ is similarly eyeing an Asian distribution network.
Meeting the media recently, Gerald Anderson downplayed criticisms that he looked too young for the role of ‘My Girl’s’ boyfriend. In the original Korean production, a more mature man played the part.
Gerald said he was willing to take a gamble, look older than his actual age, which is 19, just to maintain the role and be with his favorite girl, Kim. Kimerald had earlier done two movies, ‘First Day High’ and ‘I’ve Fallen For You.’
‘MY GIRL’ CAST COMPLETE
Mario E. Bautista ( Journal Online ) 04.07.08
THE cast of the Tagalog version of the Koreanovela, “My Girl”, ABS-CBN’s star studded summer offering, is now complete.
Two of the most popular teen stars Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson will be joined by Enchong Dee, Cathy Gonzaga, Regine Angeles, Niña Jose and newest talent, David Chua. Niña, now managed by Manny Valera and who made a splash with her sexy pictorial in FHM, is glad to be back with ABS-CBN, which discovered her in PBB Teens. “I’m also glad to be working with Kim and Gerald na mga ka-batch ko sa first PBB Teens,” she adds.
As a treat for excited viewers, the stars had their pictorial for an exclusive spread in this month’s Star Studio magazine. Because this is a summer offering, the set-up was a beach complete with sand, beach balls and of course, the teens’ sexy attires. Contrary to the allegations of some folks that their photos look cheap, ABS spent so much to make their summer looks truly unique and the production team even imported a genuine Korean stylist! Jackie Hsin is the man behind their Korean style fashion, which gives the teleserye more authentic Korean flavor! Watch out for more updates on My Girl!
Kim hindi nasulot ni Sam kay Gerald
Tonee Coraza ( Journal Online ) 04.07.08
Now it can be told, never daw na kinonsider si Sam Milby sa Tagalog adaptation ng Koreanovela na My Girl.
Gerald Anderson is Julian in My Girl
Isah V. Red ( Manila Standard Today ) 04.05.08
Not about to join the mass exodus to Laos of star wannabes whose fate was doomed from the very start, Gerald Anderson is determined although in his own quiet way to stay in local show business for as long as he can. Those who have written him off as a goner will be forced to eat their words because the young man is back in harness and proving to all and sundry that he’s the hottest leading man on television among actors his age.
Gerald has grown taller. His nearly towering height is now matched with a physique worthy of a gigantic billboard along Edsa and can give any hunk a run for his money. “I am working out regularly now,” says the teen heartthrob who turned 19 last March 7.
The decision to go on a regular physical fitness regimen stemmed from the fact that he has been tapped by ABS-CBN to play Julian, the love interest of Jasmine in the Filipino adaptation of the Korean hit drama series My Girl!
Although not a few fans of the series disagreed with the choice, Gerald is unfazed, albeit challenged to prove his detractors that the people behind the Filipino version of the popular Koreanovela made the rght choice.
“I have gone through [acting] workshops to prepare myself,” he told a group of writers who came to see him for the announcement of the network of its choice of actor to play Julian.
The Philippine version of My Girl! is the first in Philippine television, and ABS-CBN is proud to announce that it has inked a deal with SBS Korea. The series, said Roldeo Endrinal, the executive in charge of production for the series, is expected to become a big hit in the country and even around Asia.
Kim Chiu has been named to play Jasmine. The announcement came as a big surprise for the first Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Big Winner. She couldn’t hold back her tears when she learned that she had bagged the role during Dream Big Press Conference.
Gerald Anderson, meanwhile, wasn’t too sure that he’d be playing Julian. There were speculations that the production team was toying around with the idea of pairing off a slightly older actor with Kim.
After weighing the pros and cons of a possible Kimerald tandem once more, Endrinal and his team decided to peg the role with Gerald.
Endrinal added, “We thought that the fans of Kim and Gerald deserve another primetime series. After all, their love team is still hot not only across the country but in different parts of Asia as well.”
Not very many know that Sana Maulit Muli, the first series that paired off Gerald and Kim, has been shown in other countries and dubbed in different languages. It was a big hit in Taiwan and will be shown in Cambodia (dubbed in Khmer) and Vietnam soon. In fact, the Korean producers of My Girl! are very excited over the tandem because according to them, they certainly fit the roles to a “T.”
Bokbok and Poknat have become part of the national consciousness. Those who followed Sana Maulit Muli are yearning to see the two in a romantic jaunt again.
Fans will have to wait a couple of months more to see the Kimerald tandem on screen again. Meanwhile, Gerald is making sure his Julian will live up to the expectations of not only his loyal fans but the fanatics of the Korean original drama.
“This is one of the biggest challenges in my life, especially as an actor,” he said.
The Julian character in the series is 21. While there isn’t much difference physically between a 21-year-old guy and someone who’s only 19, Gerald is preparing to make himself convincing as a 21-year-old man on screen.
I have to see that for myself.
Gerald denies canoodling with other girls
Jet Valle ( Business Mirror ) 04.04.08
My girlfriend Sarah would launch a jihad just to kiss Gerald Anderson. That’s how much she is in love with this boy.
Sarah won’t admit her age to anyone of us. All that she will tell us is that if she does indeed get into a relationship with the young actor, she would be sentenced to death. But she won’t mind getting electrified or injected with a lethal amount of poison because she is utterly so into Gerald.
When she learned that I talked with the young actor recently without me bringing her along, she got royally miffed. Until now she refuses to text me back. Oh, well, she can read about my moment with the actor here....
It’s final—you are Kim Chiu’s partner in the Philippine remake of My Girl. There were talks that the project wouldn’t be handed to you. What can you say about this?
I believe things happen for a reason and if this project hadn’t been given to me, I would’ve accepted it. Of course, I would feel sad, since I believe in it so much, but I know I would move on.
There were talks that Sam Milby would be Kim’s partner because some quarters were insisting that you’re too young for the lead male character in the remake.
Well, I can’t please everybody. Sam would’ve also been great in the role, I’m sure, but all that talk only pushes me to work harder to prove the disbelievers, my critics wrong. I have to say that there are also a lot of people who support me and even fought for me to get the role and I am grateful to them. I will do my best not to let them down.
I guess the Kim Chiu loyalists are reacting to the items that have come out linking you to other girls. Let’s set the record straight. Did you really court young actress Empress Schuck?
That all started when I visited a friend on Game Ka Na Ba? and Empress was one of the contestants in the show. One thing led to another and some camps were insisting that I visited her, but that’s not true. Empress is just a friend.
What about this 15-year-old nonshowbiz girl who even put a picture in Friendster to prove that you have a relationship?
Well, that’s just it—a picture. I don’t know who she is and I don’t remember meeting her. You guys even know more about our “supposed” relationship than me. (Laughs)
OK, let’s talk about your relationship with Kim. I’m sure you will say you’re just friends, but how special is she to you?
She is very special, the most special girl in my life right now. But a lot of factors come in, that’s why it’s very hard to have a relationship right now, especially with her. I like her very much and she has a special place in my heart.
Her birthday is coming up. Her debut actually. Any plans?
Well, I’ve been planning a few things but nothing concrete yet. Even my gift for her. This is a special day for her, so I know I have to get her something extra special. I have some sort of a clue but nothing is final.
Gerald Anderson is all set to play Julian on My Girl
( ABS-CBN Interactive ) 04.03.08
"I feel very lucky to have been chosen for the part. This is the most mature role that's ever been given to me and I feel very excited. I’m looking forward to the part," says Gerald Anderson who has been tapped to play opposite Kim Chiu in the Tagalog adaptation of the Koreanovela My Girl. The 19-year-old admits that the role of Julian, a corporate-minded guy who returns to the country to manage his family's hotel business, is his most challenging role to date.
To prepare for his role as the serious Julian, Gerald reveals he’s been working out more at Kim&Geraldthe gym and attending acting workshops to get in shape for the part both physically and mentally. The PBB Teen alumni will be playing a character that is 21 years old, but Gerald sees this as a welcome challenge. He also admits that he has no problem doing kissing scenes, as long as his co-star is comfortable with it too. ”Me and the character are different because he's so focused on their business. Sana someday I'll have my own business rin. Aside from yung difference rin sa edad namin, he's really stiff, which is something I also have to learn," he explains.
Other members of the cast include Ronaldo Valdez, Bing Loyzaga, and another PBB Teen alumni Nina Jose.. "We tried to come up with a cast that is not just locally appealing, but [also one] that we can be proud to sell abroad. Since we're doing it for the first time, the first franchise format, we have to make sure that it is worth selling abroad. We're not just looking at the local market or the TFC market, but to other Asian countries as well," adds Biboy Arboleda, Ad and Promo Head for Deo Endrinal’s business unit.
When it comes to the treatment of the story, ABS-CBN Business Unit Head Deo Edrinal shares, "We're retaining the basic core of the story, but we're ‘Philippinizing’ it in so many ways. So it's going to be different. Ours is a combination of drama and comedy. It's a younger version definitely. The number of episodes is slightly more as well. Our version should run for about 16 to 20 hours." The show, which starts taping on the first week of April, is looking to shoot at various locations in Baguio. They have also gotten the services of a Korean hair and makeup group for the look of the stars. They also are getting help from one or two fashion designers to beef up the wardrobe. "Since hotel business yung storyline, mas structured yung wardrobe, so Gerald will be wearing more of day and evening suits," Arboleda explains.
There's definitely a lot of anticipation from fans and crew alike, as everyone can't wait to see My Girl hit Philippine primetime TV. "Natutuwa ako na magkakasama na naman kami ulit ni Kim. Malaking project ito para sa akin and I've always wanted to do another series after Sana Maulit Muli," Gerald says.
According to Director Eric Salud, "Nung holy week, pinanuod ko yung series, as in sobra akong na-excite, gusto ko na mag-start kasi kinikilig ako kay Julian at Jasmine. Magdadagdag kami ng konti sa storyline like the bonding between Julian and his lolo, plus Jasmine and her father. Marami na po kaming naiisip na hindi makakasira sa kuwento. So abangan niyo po." Watch for My Girl weeknights on primetime bida this coming May.
