ABS-CBN Sweeps 6th USTv Students Choice Awards

ABS-CBN once again dominated the USTv Student’s Choice Awards for the 6th straight year by bagging 19 out of 28 awards for its outstanding and values-oriented programs and personalities.

Primetime princess Kim Chiu received her first best actress award as she was chosen the Students Choice of Actress in a Daily Soap Opera for her performance as Audrey in “Tayong Dalawa,” which also emerged victorious that night as it took home the Students Choice of Daily Local Soap Opera award (CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PICTURES).

Zaijian “Santino” Jaranilla also for his share of firsts when he was recognized not as a child actor, but as an actor for the very first time, winning the Students Choice of Actor in a Daily Soap Opera. The crowd cheered loudly as Zaijian personally accepted the award with his co-nominee Gerald Anderson carrying him.

The USTv Student’s Choice Awards is an award giving body spearheaded by the Office of the Secretary General of the University of Santo Tomas, which will celebrate its 400th year by 2011. Currently on its 6th year, it aims to give recognition to programs and personalities that promote Thomasian values and in harmony with the Catholic teachings.

YES! visits Gerald Anderson at home this March

Gerald Anderson did not always lead a charmed life. Many assume that just because he was born to an American father and a Filipina mother, his cards have always held good fortune. Gerald sits with YES! magazine this March in the comfort of his home and talks about his life's journey before showbiz beckoned. It is a story that is made richer by the testimonies of his parents, Randy and Vangie.

Fans first got to know Gerald as the Fil-Am cutie born in Olongapo and raised in General Santos City, but many don't know that he also spent much of his childhood in the States. Gerald's father Randy talks about how he first bought a big house in San Antonio, Texas, then later moved the family to Kansas City, Missouri upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy.

Even if the family lived in a middle-class neighborhood, Randy explains to YES!, "Missouri is not New York or Los Angeles or even Manila. A lot of people are rural, they come from the country... It wasn't a ghetto, or the slum... But it wasn't the best place."

Eventually, the family moved to Springfield, Missouri, where they had a house with a sprawling backyard. It was here that Gerald's mom Vangie set up her own store and started a weekend tiangge selling Filipino food to Pinoys living in the neighboring towns. "[Si Gerald] talaga laborer ko. Kumbaga, kargador ko siya," Mommy Vangie proudly tells YES!.

At the age of eight, Gerald would take care of many things, including doing the heavy lifting for their senior citizen customers. They could have enlisted the help of others, but for Gerald, helping out his mom was not a burden. "Gusto ko ako ang gagawa ng trabaho na 'yan kaysa sa ibang tao," he says, "Dapat ako, kasi para sa mom ko, para sa gusto niya."

Although Mommy Vangie's homesickness found her moving back to her hometown in General Santos City alone, it was Gerald's devotion to her that reunited them. Gerald, together with his father and brother, came to GenSan to visit her. But minutes away from boarding the flight that would take them back to the States, Gerald realized that she wouldn't be joining them and he refused to let go of her.

"Hay, si Gerald talaga, kung may kamera kami no'n para kaming shooting, umiiyak talaga," Mommy Vangie tells YES!. The sight of his son crying and refusing to leave his mother made Randy bring his family back to GenSan, and he later returned to the States by his lonesome.

Gerald may now be living on his own in Manila, but his house has a room for Mommy Vangie and for his brother Kenneth, who is a pilot currently in Florida. More than 85 photos in the March issue of YES! shows how the three-storey house looks very modern and masculine, while the interiors also carry the feel of a modern bachelor's pad. Gerald's fans played a big role in furnishing his house—the main door made of narra was a present from a fan, and so were the dining set, a console table by the second-floor window, miniature cars to add to his collection, and other home accents.

Kim Chiu also lends her touch to his house, as the NBA bobbleheads she gave him sit on a shelf above his TV set and the center table is displayed prominently in his living room. But her biggest contribution to his house is the impressive silver Samsung refrigerator that dominates his kitchen. A birthday present from Kim, Gerald was overwhelmed by the sight of the two-door ref with a freezer in the bottom and a water- and ice-dispensing feature. "Sobrang laki! Lumiit 'yong kusina ko dahil doon!" he recalls telling SNN last year.

Is the grand gift a sign that they have, indeed, taken the on-screen chemistry off-screen? "We're talagang mutual understanding, pero hanggang doon pa lang," he admits. What exactly does that mean? Kim Chiu defends Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo co-star Kris Aquino against critics

Nakausap ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang young actress na si Kim Chiu tungkol sa lumabas na report na nakiusap daw ang co-star niya sa Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo na si Coco Martin na patayin na lang ang character niya dahil hindi na raw nito matagalan ang pagtatawa at panlalait sa pananamit niya ng mga kasamahan niya sa soap na sina Kim at Kris Aquino.

Mariin naman itong itinanggi ni Kim nang makapanayam namin siya sa ASAP XV kahapon, February 14.

"Wala 'yan, hindi totoo 'yan," diin niya. "Hindi ko alam kung saang lupalop ng mundo nanggaling 'yan! Kaibigan ko kaya si Coco? Kung lalaitin ko siya, sana nung Tayong Dalawa ko pa siya nilait, hindi dito sa show na ito."

According to Kim, parang pamilya na ang turingan nila sa set ng Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo kung kaya't malabo na may lumabas na ganitong mga balita.

"Para na kaming pamilya sa Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo. Ang tawag ko kay Kuya Albert [Martinez] is Daddy, kay Ms. Jaclyn [Jose] naman is Nanay. Kami naman ni Ate Kris, lagi kaming nagkukuwentuhan pag wala kaming takes. Masaya sa taping namin, magaan yung mga ginagawa namin, magkakasundo ang lahat," kuwento ni Kim.

DEFENDING KRIS. Speaking of Kris, ipinagtanggol naman ni Kim ang gumaganap na ina niya sa Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo laban sa batikos na wala raw improvement ang acting nito at mas maganda raw kung mag-host na lang ito kesa umarte dahil halos pare-pareho lang daw ang facial expressions na nakikita dito.

"OA naman!" sambit ni Kim. "Definitely hindi totoo 'yan. Siya kaya ang maraming eksena dun? Sobrang talented niya. Hindi lang siya marunong mag-host, magaling din siyang umarte saka ang bilis niyang umiyak. Sasabihan lang siya ng direktor, 'O, iiyak ka dito.' Ang sasabihin naman ni Ate Kris, 'Opo, Direk, kaya ko na 'yan.' Iiyak na yun. Hahanga ka kasi hindi lang hosting ang kaya niyang gawin."

Powerhouse cast na maituturing ang Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo. Para kay Kim, isang challenge ito sa kanya para huwag mapag-iwanan o masapawan ng mga kasama.

"Wala naman akong fear na baka masapawan ako kasi ginagawa ko lang kung ano ang dapat kong gawin. Hindi ko naman mapi-please lahat ng tao. Alam naman ng tao na magagaling sila [her co-stars], so hahabulin ko na lang yun," sabi niya.

GERALD ANDERSON. Samantala, showing pa rin ngayon sa ilang sinehan ang pelikula nina Kim at Gerald Anderson na Paano na Kaya?. Nagpapasalamat naman si Kim na tinangkilik ng mga manonood ang kanilang tambalan ni Gerald sa pelikula.

"Nakakaiyak na nakakatawa and sana ma-sustain pa rin siya. Alam ko naman na marami pang nanonood. May mga Kimeralds sa sinehan at tinitingnan nila kung kumusta yung showing. Nakakawala ng pagod. Nakaka-inspire na nagbunga lahat ng pinagpaguran at pinagpuyatan mo. Ipinagdasal naming lahat na sana maging big hit siya at ayun naman, maraming nanood at sumuporta."

Kumusta naman ang sinasabing special relationship nila ni Gerald na hanggang ngayon ay ayaw pa rin daw nilang aminin?

"Okey naman kami ni Gerald," sagot ni Kim. "Hindi naman mawawala yung pagiging special namin sa isa't isa, lalo't araw-araw kaming magkasama. Lagi kaming magkatrabaho, siyempre lagi kaming nagkukuwentuhan."

Chanel earrings daw ang regalo ni Gerald kay Kim noong Valentine's day at binigyan naman ni Kim si Gerald ng i-Pod.
